Detection of Viruses

Detection of Viruses

Based on our product “fiber optic sensor for detection of biological substances” (biosensor) we are creating a 3D measurement system for detection of viruses and their mutations.
In the product video you can see unprecedented sensitivity in a detection of optically active substance - isopropylalcohol - on one wavelength via our type R-sensor head for optically active substances.

Detection of Viruses We extended this type of measurement over the visible light spectrum range from 400 to about 760nm. The special light source for this spectrum was delivered to us by one of our cooperating partner.

With the use of this wide band sourse we get the overall pictrue of the virues in the solution via the use of two different specialized sensor heads.

From the overall picture we can pinpoint wavelegths of special interest for which lasers at these wavelegths are used. Much higher light intensity of these lasers at their specific wavelength then significantly increases light penetration from the sensor heads into solution which in turn magnifies occurence of any chemical or biological processes visible to this wavelength.

Detection of VirusesThis is first 1D of 3D measurement process.

For this graph we used type A-sensor head in three types of solutions. First solution was cultivating substrate of virus x, second solution was virus x of lower concentration in its cultivating substrate and the third solution was virus x of higher concentration in its cultivating substrate.

One can notice here that by adding virus to its subsrate new peaks are created as well as existing peaks are modified and shifted depending on concentration of the added virus.

Next researching step will be to to find out what chemical or biological substances each of the peaks represents.

One such method for this we are considering right now is observing behavior of those peaks during rising temperature.

Detection of VirusesThis is the second 2D of 3D measurement process.

For this graph we used R-sensor head in three types of solutions, the same as the ones above.

One can notice here that R-sensor head generates different peaks than A-sensor head. Othewise, adding virus to the substrate generates similar modifications to the peaks as the A-sensor head above.

Next researching step will be to to find out possible correlation between peaks discovered by two different sensor heads.

If this correlation would exist it could tremendeouly increase researhing potential of this technolgy in chemical and biological world.

Each sensor head is measuring different light properties of the virus, so that their combination can point out precisely at the type and concentration of the virus.

Furthermore, there’s focusing ability of one of the sensor heads so that one can precisely zero in on the wavelength of highest interest (in view of the type of substrate or virus). This ability gives this measurement system its third dimension 3D of 3D measurement.

Once there’s footprint of such a virus (in the background of referenced substrate) one can start other activities such as adding new substances into the solution, raising its temperature, etc., in order to see, what is happening with the virus in the solution.

There are three possible ways on how to observe these events:

  • via spectrometer, where one obtains overall picture of what is happening in the solution, but the speed of observed events (virus loosing, adding, changing any of its proteins) in the solution is limited through the speed of used spectrometer
  • via specific wavelength laser - once one knows approximately a wavelength of interest, one can use laser of this specific wavelength and observe onset of certain events in real time
  • via simulatanous use of spectrometer and one or more specific wavelength lasers
